About Us

Volunteering

There are a number of ways in which you can work with us a volunteer:

Become an Usher:

We have a growing band of Volunteer Ushers who help to deliver the highest standards of customer care and safety whilst enjoying the general atmosphere of our theatre. Ideally you will be over 18, free one or two nights a week and if possible daytime matinees, have an interest in the arts and be willing to work as a member of the team.

Voulunteer Usher selling programmesSelling programmes is just one role of many that our ushers perform

The ushers play an integral role in the front of house operation at the theatre. The main duties involve checking tickets, selling ice creams, clearing up the auditorium at the end of the show and providing friendly and helpful customer service. The evening shifts tend to last between 3 and 4 hours depending on the length of the show. The part the ushers play in the evacuation procedure is the most important aspect of the role. The usher team is made up of people of all ages and from all walks of life and only a minimum of training is required. A voucher entitling ushers to two complimentary tickets is given at the end of each shift.

At the moment we are not recruiting ushers. We have discovered that the best experience for volunteers at the New Wolsey is if they have the opportunity to work frequently, normally once a week so we try and keep staffing numbers to a level that not only covers the performance schedule but also prevents big gaps between usher shifts. If you are interested in joining the team, please check this page regularly and we will post updates when a vacancy arises.

Join the Friday Club:

The Friday Club is a very sepcial group of people who help us with mailings. The schedule is decided at the start of the season and members come along when they can, usually for 2 to 3 hours starting at 10am. Each mailing session is managed by our Marketing & Outreach Assistant Rachel Backhouse who keeps the coffee flowing. If you would like to become a member of The Friday Club, email Rachel at

Become a New Wolsey Activist:

If you would like to help us to generate new audiences by distributing print in your home town, at work, at shcool or ar events which you attend please let us know. In return you will be entitled to free tickets to 'most' shows. When you attend a show we will leave print at the Box Office for you to take away as the cost of mailing large quantities of print is prohibitive. We want to recruit activists of all ages. If you are intrested in knowing more about this role please email Marketing & Press Officer Sharon Jenkins,

Volunteer Week:

We celebrate National Volunteer Week every year and invite all of our volunteers to join us for a fun evening at the theatre. Last years Pub Quiz was a lot of fun and details of this year's activities will be announced soon.
