Artist Relationship Programme

Our Artist Relationship Programme presents a range of opportunities designed to support and develop artists and creatives at all stages of their careers. From our online masterclasses, to scratch nights and our Associate Artists scheme, we want to help artists to form a network of supportive peers, expand their skills set, make and try out work, sustain their careers & fulfil their potential in the creative industries.

We are particularly keen to support the work of East Anglian (with a focus on Suffolk & Norfolk) theatre freelancers and artists and creatives from underrepresented backgrounds.

For young people aged 16-21 years who are looking for a weekly group in which they can develop their skills as as emerging artists, our Creative Communities team offer Young Creatives

If you’re an artist or creative and you would like to join our mailing list please contact Rachel Fitzgerald, Producer, at RFitzgerald@wolseytheatre.co.uk

Online masterclasses

Across the year we offer a varying programme of online masterclasses presented by industry professionals. Previous masterclasses include Being Playful with Playwriting and Producing Your Own Work.

We also hold Project Grant Writing Bootcamps, an online series designed to demystify the application process, provide a friendly space for critical reflection within a network of peers, and offer guidance to support the development of an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant.

Upcoming masterclasses and bootcamps will be advertised on our What’s On page and in the Suffolk Theatre Professionals Network group.

Scratch Night

Our Scratch Nights are held in our upstairs Bar and provide a relaxed and friendly evening for local performers from the East Anglian region to try out new work in front of an audience.

Next Scratch Night – Friday 31st January 2025

We are looking for artists aged 16+ to present 10-15 minutes of a work-in-progress at our Scratch Night on Friday 31st January 2025. This is a great opportunity to workshop a piece which may be in the early stages of development and receive feedback from an audience. This might be short scenes from plays, comedy, music, spoken word, movement, drag, poetry etc.

Our Scratch Nights are held in our upstairs Bar and provide a relaxed and friendly evening for local performers from the East Anglian region to try out new work in front of an audience.

This Scratch Night is also a chance to network and develop conversations with professional performance makers as part of the Suffolk Theatre Professionals Network.

We are committed to providing a safe environment for artists to push the boundaries of their creativity, to try, fail and try again, and to interrogate their ideas and those of others within a supportive network of peers.

Performances should last for 10-15 minutes and artists will need to:

  • Provide any props the performance requires.
  • Provide all technical requirements with as much notice as possible (see ‘We Provide’ for tech info).
  • Provide your own performers and creatives as required.
  • Be available for a tech slot between 4pm and 6pm on the day of the event.

We provide:

  • A slot to share your 10-15 minute piece of work-in-progress with an audience in our Café-Bar.
  • Assistance with collecting feedback in a safe space.
  • Basic technical support and operator for the performance (please note the venue is our Upstairs Bar with a max. playing space of 2m x 2m. We can only provide basic sound and the lighting will be in a fixed state).
  • A total fee of £100 per performance slot.

How to Apply:

Send an email outlining who you are and what you want to perform to: Rachel Fitzgerald, Producer at: RFitzgerald@wolseytheatre.co.uk  or call 01473 295 932.

Suffolk Theatre Professionals Network: Arts Council Project Grant Bootcamp

A free series of three in-depth sessions designed to help performance makers and creative producers to write and submit an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant application. Project Grants are funding to support projects that focus on Combined Arts (including festivals and carnivals), Dance, Libraries, Literature, Museums, Music, Theatre, or Visual Arts.

Across the three sessions we will demystify the grant application process, offer guidance to support the development of a funding bid, and provide a friendly space for critical reflection within a network of peers.

Sessions will be led by New Wolsey Theatre Artistic Director and Chief Executive, Douglas Rintoul.

There are two ways to take part in this series; as a performance maker or creative producer developing a bid or as an observer:

Performance Maker/Creative Producer developing a bid: Up to four spaces will be offered to performance makers or creative producers who are looking to submit a project grant application for live performance. These applications will be actively discussed and developed as part of the sessions. Ideally, you will be based in, or have connections to, Suffolk or the East Anglian region, and we use the term ‘performance maker’ to cover a variety of creative roles such as writer, dancer, theatre-maker, director etc. You don’t need to have started an application to be considered, but you will need to be committed to working on the bid outside of the sessions and submitting it by 30th April 2025.

If you want to be considered for one of these spaces please send an email with a short bio and brief description of what your project bid will be for to Rachel Fitzgerald: RFitzgerald@wolseytheatre.co.uk  or call us on 01473 295 932.

Deadline: Monday 20th January 2025, 10am.

Observer: Spaces are also available for people who want to develop a deeper understanding of bid writing by watching the process.

Please note that all sessions will be recorded and made available online to people who have signed up to the Suffolk Theatre Professionals Artist Network as a recap and learning resource.

You’ll need to be available for all 3 sessions, which will be delivered online:

Monday 3rd February, 6 – 9pm

Monday 3rd March, 6 – 9pm

Monday 31st March, 6 – 9pm

Spaces are free, but must be booked in advance. Book your place below and a link to the zoom meeting will be emailed to you nearer the time.

Access: Zoom auto-captions will be available for this event. The sessions will include comfort breaks and will take a relaxed atmosphere approach, meaning you can turn your camera off and take breaks as required. If you require any other access support please get in touch before the event for a conversation.
