'Moby Dick' Director Jesse Jones

A fast and vibrant reimagining of Herman Melville's classic, featuring sea shanties played live on stage

October, 1839. The Pequod is due to sail out of Nantucket and her skipper, the notorious Captain Ahab, is in need of a crew. Seeking fortune and adventure, humble schoolmaster Ishmael ships aboard, joining a company charged with one task: to wreak revenge on the white whale that lost Ahab his leg – the infamous Moby Dick.

The spirit and atmosphere of Herman Melville’s masterpiece – romantic, ambiguous, and rich with allegory – is gloriously captured on stage by the award-winning ensemble Simple8.

The crew of the Pequod stand aboard, at different levels of the ship. In the centre, on a raised platform, is Starbuck, looking out to sea. The rest of the crew stand around the outside, some playing musical instruments including a violin and an accordion.

Queequeg is lifted into the air by his other crew mates on the ship. The stage is lit a navy blue colour, reflecting the night time out at sea, and the crew look concerned about something they see in the distance.

The crew of the Pequod hold up different bits of wood that create the outline of the whale, Moby Dick. In front of this, Ishmael addresses the audience, describing the whale.

Queequeg and Ishamel crouch on a raised platform, both clinging to the edge of the ship as sails through rough waters.

The crew of the Pequod, led by Captain Ahab who stands in the centre, row out to sea on two smaller boats, to get a closer look at Moby Dick. Ahab looks fierce as he instructs his team to row. In the background, Starbuck remains on the Pequod, standing on a raised platform.
